Contemporary Abstract Artist

I’m a New Hampshire-based artist working in painting and mixed media to explore emotional experience and identity. I often begin my creative process with a poem or short story, allowing fragments of text to find their way into or beneath the surface of each piece. My work reflects a gestural, physical engagement with materials and an embrace of imperfection.

Ongoing Body of Work…

Nosce te ipsum’ (Latin for ‘know thyself’) is an ongoing body of work around personal identity and understanding who I am, both internally and externally. Each piece in this ongoing series incorporates written text on the surface, sometimes difficult to read and sometimes clearly legible. The process of writing before beginning a painting grounds me in a specific mood or emotion for the piece, and the merging of language and media has deepened my connection to the pieces and the depth of theme for the entire body.

Nosce te ipsum IV

I lie awake
Where the fruit grows in the orchard
Time was wasted
But I’m returning
Like a flash of icy water
And a dreamland full of candied apples
I’ve been here
In the field
All along

Nosce te ipsum II

A bird has guarded this tree
For as long as she can remember
Until the crack of thunder,
A white hot, rolling sky above
Split the tree
Limb by limb
Slowly, steadily
A dying bond back to the earth
In its place a single seed

Nosce te ipsum III

Can you see through to my heart
Where the real world lies
The pain stings
I’m sick of hiding
Swallow me whole so it can be unseen
Can you see the shame

Nosce te ipsum I

All those years ago, she was dragged under the mountain
Locked away
In a cage without a key.
No guard, no keeper, no watchman
The dark ravens taught her of life,
How it is damp and dreary.
”It is miserable from here,” they’d say
But life just felt like life
Hidden away in those dark caverns,
She’d never see the wildflowers swaying above,
No sense of the blinding sun.
A fullness for life did not exist here
Instead a net of emptyness,
All that could be left
